The due date of filing an Income tax return is near after so many extensions, i.e., 31st December 2020. After filing your income tax return, it is mandatory to verify ITR-V; otherwise, your return will not be treated as a “Valid Return.”
On successful E-verification of return only, your refunds (if any) are proceeds by the income tax department.
There are various modes to verify income tax returns. So, the users can choose any of the below-mentioned methods as per their convenience.
Modes of E-verification of Income Tax Return
- E- verification via Aadhaar based OTP
- Verify ITR via Net Banking
- Verification via bank account
- Verification through Demat account
- Verification through bank ATM
- By sending signed ITR-V receipt
If you verify the return through any electronic means, you don’t need to send the physical copy of ITR-V /acknowledgment to the income tax department.

How to e-verify Income tax return by using EVC
Step 1: Log in at Income tax portal with User ID and Password
Step 2: At the dashboard, select the option “View Returns/Forms.”
Step 3: After that, select “Click here to view your returns pending for e-verification.” You will see the “e-verify” option; once you click on this, a list of different modes will open to generate EVC.
Step 4: Select the option as per your convenience and after that enter the EVC code to submit.
Step 5: On successful submission, a confirmation message will be displayed containing the transaction ID and EVC code. You can download it for future reference.
How to e-verify Income tax return by using Aadhaar based OTP
For verifying ITR via Aadhar based OTP, your registered number at the Income-tax portal must be linked with the Aadhaar number, and your PAN must be linked with Aadhaar.
1: Firstly, log in at the portal and go to “My account.”
2: Click on “E-verify return” and select “I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-verify my return.”
3: You will receive a 6 digits OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and submit it.
Note: Aadhaar based OTP remains valid for 30 minutes, otherwise it will be lapsed.
However, if your mobile number is not linked with Aadhaar, then you can choose other methods to E-verify ITR.
How to e-verify Income tax return by using Net-Banking
Taxpayers can generate EVC via internet banking. The income tax department has prescribed the specified banks specified here https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/main/bank_netbanking to e-verify ITR. Further, make sure your PAN must be linked with the bank account.
Step 1: Log in to your internet banking at the bank’s website.
Step 2: Select the “e-verify” option that could be found under the “tax” tab, and you will be redirected to the e-filing website.
Step 3: Now, click on “My account” and select the option “Generate EVC.” You will receive 10 digits alpha-numeric code on your mobile number and email account.
Step 4: Select the “e-verify” option under the “My account” tab and select “I have EVC already.”
Step 5: Enter the OTP receive in step 3 and click on “Submit” button. Your return will be verified.
How to e-verify Income tax return by using bank account
Another way to e-verify your return is via a bank account. The income tax department has allowed this facility for the selected banks specified here https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/main/bank_account . If you have a bank account falling under this list, you can verify your ITR.
Step 1: Log in at the income tax portal and go to the profile settings to pre-validate your bank account.
Step 2: Fill in the required details, i.e., bank name, account number, IFSC code, and mobile number registered at the bank.
Step 3: On successful pre-validation, select the “Generate EVC” option under the “My account” tab. Then, you will receive a code on your mobile number.
Step 4: Select the “e-verify” option under the “My account” tab and submit the code.
How to e-verify Income tax return through Demat account
If you have a Demat account, you can verify your return through the Demat account also. However, make sure that your mobile number and email id should be linked with the Demat account.
1: Log in at the income tax portal and go to the profile settings to pre-validate your Demat account.
2: Fill in the required details, i.e., email id, mobile number, and depository name (NSDL or CDSL).
3: After that, go to the ‘Generate EVC’ option and select ‘Generate EVC through Demat Account number.’
4: Enter the code received to verify your ITR.

How to e-verify Income tax return by using Bank ATM
If you have a bank ATM, then you can use this method to verify your return. The income tax department offers this facility through some selected banks only. Check the list https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/main/bank_atm before proceeding.
1. Visit your bank ATM and click on the option “Pin for Income Tax Filing.” You will receive an EVC on your registered mobile number.
2. Log in to the Income-tax website and click on “E-verify returns.” After that, select the option “‘Already generated EVC through bank ATM.’
3. Enter the EVC, and your return will be verified.
By sending signed ITR-V receipt
In case you are not able to verify by using any of the above methods, you can send the signed physical copy of ITR-V to the income tax department. However, you need to send it via ordinary or speed post only. Further, no other document is required to be attached along with ITR-V.
